Zeitschrift für hessische Geschichte und Landeskunde
The Journal for Hessian History and Regional Studies [Zeitschrift für hessische Geschichte und Landeskunde] (ZHG) was first published in 1837 and is one of Germany’s oldest Journals on regional history. During the first 100 years of its existence every two or three years a volume was published. Since 1952 every year a new volume appears or every two years a double volume, so that in 1995 the publication of volume 100 could be celebrated. Members of the Society receive a free copy of the current issue of the ZHG by regular mail.
The ZHG principally publishes scholarly articles on Hessian regional history with the aim of disseminating new research results not only among the members of the Society but generally among researchers and others interested in regional history at universities, archives, schools, and groups working on local history. To further this objective the ZHG is published fully online one year after its publication in print: http://www.vhghessen.de/. In addition the Society maintains a widespread exchange of journals to make the research results fruitful for comparative regional history beyond the Hessian borders.
Regarding space the contributions focus on the State of Hesse, predominantly the former Prince Electorate Hesse and the so-called Hessian Rear Country [Hessisches Hinterland]. Adjacent territorial parts can be thematically included. Regarding time the spectrum reaches from prehistory and early history to present time history. Also thematically a broad spectrum is covered, from archaeology to the history of architecture, art, music and culture, the history of education, schools and universities, of science and medicine, church and religious history, the history of rulership, administrative, legal and constitutional history, social and economic history, the history of territory, town and village, the history of dynasty and family, national socialism and the culture of remembrance up to natural and regional studies.
The essay section is complemented by a review section where recent publications from Hessian regional and local history as well as publications with a connection to Hesse find critical appraisal.
