The Zeitschrift für die Geschichte und Altertumskunde Ermlands. Beiträge zur Kirchen- und Kulturgeschichte des Preußenlandes [Journal for the History and Study of Antiquities of Warmia. Contributions on the ecclesiastical and cultural history of the Prussian lands] (ZGAE) is the academic publication forum of the Historical Society for Warmia [Historischer Verein für Ermland], founded in 1856 in Frauenburg. Between 1858 and 1943 in 85 yearly issues 28 volumes of the journal appeared. After the re-establishment of the Society in 1956 the journal has been published in alternation with an accompanying monograph series, since 2009 the journal is published as a yearbook. Its content focused traditionally on the history of the secular territory of the Diocese of Warmia, increasingly the Old Prussian Dioceses of Chełm, Pomesania and Sambia as well as the Archdeaconate Pomerelia in the Diocese of Włocławek and the modern Dioceses Chełm and Gdańsk were included. To foster the international communication about new research approaches and results and the local cooperation, developed since the 1970s, with the academic research on historic Prussia, in 2009 a preliminary German-Polish editorial consultation board has been institutionalised. Now, as the interest in ecclesiastical, cultural and religious history as part of European and transnational traditions internationally gains ever more weight, the journal wants to offer them a forum.
