Since 1848 the Association for History and Regional Studies of Osnabrück (Historical Association) [Verein für Geschichte und Landeskunde von Osnabrück (Historischer Verein)] publishes the Osnabrück Historical Journal [Osnabrücker Mitteilungen]. The Association is one of the oldest historical associations of Westphalia and also of Lower Saxony.

Since its foundation the Association, its sphere comprising until today the former district of Osnabrück, aims at promoting the scholarly research of the history of the Osnabrück Land, the Emsland and of the County of Bentheim, at collecting the results and making them available to a broad audience.

Until 2016, the Osnabrück Historical Journal was self-published. Since 2017, the volumes have been published at the Verlag für Regionalgeschichte.
