The New Archive for Saxon History [Neues Archiv für sächsische Geschichte] has, since its first issue in 1863, been the central publication platform for Saxon regional history. It had earned itself a prominent place amongst the regional historical journals in Germany until its publication had to be stopped in 1943 due to the war. Under the terms of the German Democratic Republic, it was not possible to put the journal back in operation. Only after a break of 50 years, the journal was continued in 1993.

Every volume contains a section of scholarly articles, a section "research and discussion", and an extensive review section.
