Together with the Committee of the Historical Commissions in Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Marburg and Wiesbaden, the Hesse State Office for Historical Regional Studies [Hessisches Landesamt für geschichtliche Landeskunde] (HLGL) has been publishing the Hesse Yearbook for Regional History [Hessisches Jahrbuch für Landesgeschichte] since 1963.

The journal contains scholarly articles on Hesse and comparative regional history, reviews with indications on specialized publications as well as annual activity reports of the Historical Commission for Hesse, the Hesse Historical Commission Darmstadt, the Historical Commission for Nassau and the Hesse State Office for Historical Regional Studies.

The editorship and all editoral and organizational tasks are handled by the Hesse State Office for Historical Regional Studies.
