Since the foundation of the Historical Society for the Lower Rhine [Historischer Vereins für den Niederrhein] in 1854, the Annals of the Historical Society of the Lower Rhine [Annalen des Historischen Vereins für den Niederrhein] have been endeavouring to research the Rhenish history in their articles.

Geographically, the journal refers to the territory of the old archdiocese Cologne, which spreads beyond the Lower Rhine in its narrower sense and includes the neighbouring territories. The articles cover the entire Rhenish history since the end of ancient times, focusing on the history of the old Rhenish territories in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period.

Beside the article section, the Annals feature an extensive review section with reviews of all major publications on Rhenish history.
